Let’s take an in-depth look at what each ingredient contributes:
Desiccated Grass-fed Kidney—This organ shines as an immunity booster by providing powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It is rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids that soothe inflammation throughout your body and boost heart function. Grass-fed kidney is also a potent detoxifier, containing specific proteins, peptides, enzymes, and cofactors that support your own internal kidney health. Your kidneys are responsible for balancing red blood cell levels, as well as mineral and electrolyte levels. When these are out of balance, they take a toll on immunity and overall well-being. In a “like treats like” manner, a desiccated kidney cleanses your kidneys, which act as a filtration system for the body and play a major role in removing toxins from the bloodstream.
Kidney supplementation can also play a role in boosting lagging hormone production by its ability to support the thyroid. Selenium is provided abundantly in kidney organ meat and is not only neuroprotective; it is a must-have for the manufacturing and metabolizing of thyroid hormones. We need this mineral to convert T4 (our inactive thyroid hormone) to T3 (our active and helpful thyroid hormone). When T3 is tanked, your thyroid can’t function efficiently. Kidney also provides zinc in robust amounts, which is another crucial nutrient for converting thyroid hormones from T4 to T3.
Back to the kidneys’ provision of selenium… we also need this mineral at proper levels to keep our detox pathways open and not become toxic from non-metabolized estrogen. Supplemental kidney is a powerful aid in supporting our endogenous hormone balance (hormones made by our body) and a healthy exogenous hormone experience (hormones supplemented into the body, i.e., bioidentical hormone therapy). It does this by nourishing our endocrine system while keeping our blood clean and open to metabolize all our helpful hormones. Those of us who choose to use bioidentical hormone therapy will serve ourselves well by involving desiccated kidney in our well-being protocols.
Kidney organ supplementation also provides the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO), which helps break down histamine in the body from eating certain foods. This is not just any ole little add-on benefit. Inadequate DAO levels can be paralyzing to vibrant health and well-being. Consuming desiccated kidney provides an answer for those struggling with histamine intolerance syndrome (the excessive accumulation of histamine in the body).
Desiccated kidney also blesses us with a plethora of other vitamins and minerals, like the full extended family of Bs… B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, and B12. Vitamin A will also catch a piggyback ride with the whole clan of Bs on the back of kidney supplementation. Phosphorus, iron, and copper are also on board.
Desiccated Grass-fed Thymus Gland—This organ shines most brightly when it comes to immune health and allergy relief. Your thymus gland is the main organ in your body that regulates your immune system, but it also experiences the most decline as you age. This decline starts early… right after puberty. At puberty, your thymus reaches its largest size, and after that, studies show that it starts shrinking by 3% each year. Once in your mid-forties, the decline continues at about 1% yearly. This means that by age 50, only about 15% of your thymus gland remains, and by age 65, it cannot do its job… which is to produce T cells to fight off disease. It simply turns into fatty tissue and sits there doing nothing.
In keeping with the “like treats like” theory, thymus supplementation greatly aids your own thymus gland, but thankfully, it even generates its own action when yours cannot. Unique proteins exclusively found in bovine thymus tissue nourish your thymus, but even if you’re older and don’t have much thymus left, bovine thymus can help provide added immune action. Three peptides (small proteins) that enhance immunity are found in bovine thymus. These are thymosin alpha 1, which helps develop disease-fighting T cells, and thymopoietin and serum thymic factor, which further regulate and support immune health. All three of these peptides enhance natural killer (NK) cell activity to help fight off illnesses and infections.
Research has clearly shown in both animal and human studies that thymus extracts (from calves and other animals) can provide immune enhancement by regenerating and/or increasing the production and activity of T lymphocytes and white blood cells known as macrophages. Thymus gland extract has been successfully used to relieve many allergic responses like itching, watery eyes, sneezing, and runny nose. Multiple research studies have shown it to help those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, eczema, bronchitis in adults, respiratory infections in children, and even migraine headaches. The extract has also been shown to reduce post-surgical infections and decrease chemotherapy and radiation damage. There is even research showing its benefit for patients with an enlarged heart (dilated cardiomyopathy). Some health researchers speculate that heart issues like myocarditis, a dangerous inflammation of the heart from virus attacks, such as seen with the recent COVID-19 virus, may also benefit from thymus extract. A fascinating research article about the thymus gland and its benefits is called THYMUS EXTRACTS: An International Literature Review of Clinical Studies by James Wilson (PhD). It presents some fascinating studies, some of which deal with its potential benefit for more serious diseases such as autoimmune conditions and cancer.
Grass-Fed Spleen—Bovine Spleen is another organ that contains peptides that promote immune health. Two of these peptides are tuftsin and splenopentin. Both have been shown to stimulate the immune defense system by enlisting macrophages.
One of the spleen’s unique talents is that it offers the highest source of natural iron, above all other food sources, even above liver! Heme iron, primarily found in animal sources, is more easily absorbed by the body as it is chemically bound to hemoglobin. Bovine spleen is this powerful heme iron source. It has been shown to help with restless legs, pale skin, and hair loss. As iron builds healthy blood formation, supports robust immune function, and reduces fatigue by promoting energy, so does spleen supplementation. No immune and wellness supplement is worth its salt without spleen extract. Spleen also contains vitamin C, which is remarkable for an animal food, as it is extremely rare to find it in an animal source. No, vitamin C amounts are not super high in spleen, but they are super bioavailable, and when C is consumed with iron-rich foods, it causes better iron absorption and less iron troubles. Vitamin B12 is again on board with this iron-rich organ meat, and this duo harmonizes for a power-packed immune function and red blood cell production.
Spleen’s two most powerful immune-boosting peptides—tuftsin and splenopentin stimulate your immune system’s infection-fighting white blood cells and enhance the activity of “natural killer” (NK) cells. NK cells secrete chemicals that turn on the immunological functions of other cells and ward off diseases. In fact, these peptides in spleen are so potent that in the 1930s, they were formulated into an extract called Splenin. It has been clinically proven to boost white blood cell counts and ward off infections. It is still used to treat low immune function in some parts of Germany to this day.
Regenerative Organic Certified® Shiitake Mushroom Mycelium—This is our chosen fungi to work in synergy with the three animal organs for our immune formula. The shiitake mushroom is known for its impressive immune-enhancing qualities. The rich supply of antioxidants removes reactive oxygen species that can damage cells and impair the health of our bodies. Your cells are greatly improved when these reactive oxygen species are removed. Cancer risk is also lowered as reactive oxygen species promote cancer (there is much research available on breast cancer risk dramatically lowering with shiitake mushroom intake).
Shiitake is one of the rare plants that contains significant bioavailable amounts of vitamin D. The plant kingdom is notoriously inadequate in vitamin D. Shiitake breaks that mold, especially in freeze-dried form, where the vitamin D is retained rather than lost. Vitamin D is easily degraded in mushrooms once they are removed from sunlight. However, a 2018 study published in the Drying Technology Journal showed that shiitake mushrooms (above other mushrooms) retain high amounts of vitamin D2. Vitamin D activates immune cells. It also inhibits cancer cell proliferation and promotes normal cell differentiation. This means it helps prevent the onset and progression of cancer. Shiitake is also rich in B complex vitamins, contributing to its immune-boosting strength. The B complex vitamins are also immune-enhancing and have cancer-preventing properties.
Shiitake hits cancer hard from many angles as it also improves the gut and helps the body eliminate harmful carcinogens. Beta-glucans are one of the shiitake’s unique properties that give it such a positive influence over the gut. Shiitake is teeming with these gut-healing polysaccharides. In the gut, they help activate immune cells such as macrophages, NK cells, and dendritic cells. They also enhance the ability to fight against harmful pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Shiitake also improves gut environment through its prebiotic fiber, promoting beneficial bacteria growth. As the gut improves, our immune system follows suit. Shiitake’s ability to trigger the growth of “good bugs” in our gut is one more reason to include it in a formula designed to support Immunity and overall wellness. Some other reasons are its ability to help fight against high blood sugar and aid in diabetes prevention, cholesterol reduction, and stronger bones.
Terminalia Bellirica Extract —This powerful plant extract is a friend to those of us in later pause seasons because it is a proven uric acid inhibitor. As we explained in the second Wisdom Is Plant Strong chapter, uric acid rises as we females age, and that can result in an uptick in inflammation and fat gain. A 2016 study published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology showed treatment with Terminalia Bellirica resulted in significantly lower serum uric acid levels compared to baseline and placebo in just four weeks.
Beyond lowering uric acid, it helps boost the immune system, kills harmful microbes, and protects the body from infections through the action of its copious antioxidants and bioactive substances. As a wellness therapy ingredient, it is also a powerful cardiotonic. It has shown abilities to strengthen heart muscles, lower blood cholesterol, and stop lipids from building up, making it less likely for someone to get atherosclerosis, heart blockages, heart attacks, and blood clots.
You can’t have an effective immune formula without ingredients supporting the respiratory system. Terminalia Bellirica is one of those carefully chosen ingredients and even works as a strong cough suppressant. It also aids with respiratory conditions like bronchitis and asthma. It is anti-inflammatory in nature and helps in wound healing of all kinds. The bioactive compounds it contains trigger the body to grow new tissue. Internal wounds like ulcers respond well. This ingredient possesses anti-ulcer properties and helps treat the gamut of ulcers, such as ulcerative colitis, peptic ulcers, canker sores, and mouth ulcers, to name a few. As a potent anti-inflammatory, it is also known as an anti-arthritic. It has been shown to help ease the pain and swelling caused by different types of arthritis, especially rheumatoid arthritis.
Terminalia Bellirica is excellent for digestion, and we all know you can’t have immune health or be well without robust gut function. Of course, we have a Bio-Organ Gut Health Therapy supplement that stands alone, but we wanted to cover the gut in our Immune and Wellness formula, as well, so that it can be a thorough therapy all on its own for people who cannot afford both. Together, they work synergistically and even more potently, but alone, they also kick some serious bummy! Terminalia Bellirica extract treats a number of gastrointestinal problems. It is a natural digestive cleanser that removes accumulated toxins in the GI tract. It is known to help with gas, bloating, gut distension, cramps, diarrhea, and or constipation. It helps break down the food in meals, stimulates the production of digestive juices, and makes it easier for the body to absorb essential nutrients through the intestines. It also helps the liver produce more bile, which aids in peristaltic action and moves things along. More bile helps the large intestines have an easier time getting rid of waste. In addition, this amazing plant extract reduces the amount of mucus in stools and keeps stools from sticking to the intestinal walls.
As a finale, it is also a mild aphrodisiac which is especially important for those of us who are married and in our later pause years.
Beta-Glucan—We already talked a little about the wonders of beta-glucan contained in shiitake, but to make sure you get even more significant amounts of this immune-enhancing substance, we have also added beta-glucan in its potent extract form. A study at the University of Louisville titled, Comparison of Immunological Properties of Various Bioactive Combinations, showed that Beta-glucans outperform vitamin C for immune health and wellness. Based on their research results, a beta-glucan supplement was 160 times more effective than a vitamin C supplement!
Beta-glucans have gotten some fame as an overall heart helper as well. They help control cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular disease and hypertension (high blood pressure). When beta-glucan is taken with a meal, it slows carbohydrate and lipid absorption, helping post-meal blood sugar and lipid responses. For this reason, it is also known as an anti-diabetic. Beta-glucan digestion produces short-chain fatty acids through colonic fermentation and releases appetite-regulating hormones such as peptide YY (PYY), ghrelin, and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). They all help with healthier satiety, blood sugar, and positive body composition changes.
Beta-glucans also help the brain function better. Recent research published in Frontiers in Nutrition in 2022 showed that they enhance cognition through the role of the Gut-Brain Axis. This research revealed that long-term supplementation with beta-glucan enhanced memory recognition and prevented cognitive deficits.
Organic Saccharomyces Cerevisiae—This beneficial bacteria species is traditionally used as an immune booster, antioxidant, neuroprotective agent, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, and antitumoral. Now, research is beginning to back up the historical testimonies of this good bug. Studies published in the Encyclopedia of Food Microbiology in 2014 show that S. cerevisiae is helpful with acute respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disorders, and immune-compromised diseases.
Interestingly, S. cerevisiae is the most intensely studied eukaryotic organism in molecular and cell biology. These kinds of organisms have complicated cells packed with a fascinating array of subcellular structures that play important roles in energy, balance, metabolism, and gene expression.
Organic Melon Fruit Extract—Antioxidant-loaded, this plant extract boasts a long list of “anti’s”—meaning it is anti-things that go wrong with the human body. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-platelet, and anti-microbial. It is also an analgesic, an anthelmintic, a diuretic, hepatoprotective (prevents damage to the liver), and has immunomodulating effects. Rich in phytochemicals, phenolic compounds, terpenes, and flavonoids, it naturally helps prevent oxidative stress. Cucumis Melo L. also significantly boosts nitric oxide, which we all know is a boon to cardiovascular health, but also to penile health in men and clitoral health in women. You’ll find out in the skin chapters that nitric oxide is also crucial for glowing skin. This extract also shows high (SOD) superoxide dismutase activity, which helps break down potentially harmful oxygen molecules in the cells.
Our immune formula is really a twofer. It provides you not only with heightened immune strength but also with metabolism-boosting support. A study published in the Future Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2020 showed that treatment with C. Melo fruit extract caused a reduction in blood glucose levels and can be used as an effective antidiabetic. More research published in the IJCEM International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Medicine in 2018 showed that Cucumis Melo L. alleviates obesity and insulin resistance in both obese human subjects and high-fat diet-induced obese mice. A clinical study showed weight loss in 22 obese patients. The mouse research also demonstrated that Cucumis treatment effectively rescues high-fat diet-induced changes in body weight, epididymal fat weight, glucose, insulin, cholesterol, and insulin resistance without liver or renal toxicity. This same article proved Cucumis has potent anti-inflammatory effects, as evidenced by reduced adipose tissue macrophages (remember in the Plant Strong chapters—they are associated with stiffened fat cells, so we definitely want them reduced) and decreased expression of tumor necro- sis factor-a and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in fat.
Bacillus Subtilis—This soil-based probiotic is another powerful immune igniter. Regarding amounts? The more the merrier, so it is in both our gut formula and immune formula. This soil-based probiotic helps your body to produce over 12 natural antibiotics to help keep your gut free of harmful bacteria. Most of us modern folk aren’t exposed enough to soil in our daily lives. One of the best things about soil-based probiotics is that they colonize in the large intestine and don’t grow in the small intestine. Some 2020 research published in Gastroenterology Research and Practice found that Bacillus subtilis could alter gut microbiota and decontaminate SIBO.
B. Subtilis helps reduce IBS symptoms as well as other gastrointestinal issues. In laboratory experiments published in the Canadian Journal of Microbiology in 2000 and also in Beneficial Microbes in 2012, B. subtilis increased Bifidobacteria, decreased some harmful Clostridium groups, and enhanced the growth of L. reuteri and L. acidophilus. L. reuteri is one of the top fat-loss gut bugs (if not the very top one), so we definitely want more of it! The sad reality is that most modern Westerners do not have any of these fat-burning bacteria left in their gut. In fact, 96% of us have lost all of it. It is easily wiped out with just one course of antibiotics, so regaining it should be on our to-do list, and it is possible with B. subtilis.
B. subtilis is a no-brainer for your gut. It balances your microbiota, causing the beneficial kind to flourish and reducing the not-so-friendly kind. It is also a strong opponent against infections like C. Difficile and H. Pylori. It helps with general tummy pain and constipation, helps treat and prevent acid reflux symptoms, reduces inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, and, over time, helps with the not-so-socially acceptable three… gas, bloating, and belching. (Note the “over time” words, as any time you add in a good bug to your digestive system, there can be heightened gas and bloating at first.) Overall, digestion improves with B. subtilis, and even health-crippling issues like leaky gut syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can significantly improve over time and even retain remission. Research published in 2010 in Beneficial Microbes showed positive results for ulcerative colitis. Reduced bloody stools were seen, and there was even complete remission without relapse in some study participants.
One of the main reasons B. subtilis is so effective is that it can survive the harsh environment of digestion. It passes through the digestive tract unharmed. Unlike many other probiotic bacteria, it needs no refrigeration and is completely shelf-stable. Animal research published in 2020 in Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins showed that B. subtilis is an anti-infective and, to some extent, could replace antibiotics and improve innate immunity. It enhanced disease resistance in broiler chickens.
Another study (human this time) showed a reduced incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, nausea, bloating, vomiting, and abdominal pain (published in JMM Case Reports in September 2014). This super bacteria soldiers on in the body, improving many more things like dental health and even liver function.
A study published in Marie Lefevre et al. in Immun Ageing in 2015 showed that it can reduce the number of sick days people experience in the winter. Another study published in Beneficial Microbes in 2020 showed that supplementation promotes lower lipid levels and improves cardiovascular health. An interesting study cited in Biol Pharm Bull in 2018 showed it can even help with neck and shoulder stiffness. That’s good news for women in late perimenopause or menopause itself, who are often afflicted with frozen shoulder issues.
