Let’s take an in-depth look at how each ingredient helps:
Grass-Fed Bovine Duodenum—Consuming this organ helps with digestion and gut inflammation and aids in healing leaky gut syndrome. It increases the bioavailability of vitamins and minerals in meals, supports better absorption of nutrients, and helps break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Interestingly, grass-fed bovine duodenum can also help reduce the growth of harmful bacteria introduced by foodborne illnesses. Duodenum also nourishes the thyroid gland and supports energy production to boot.
Grass-Fed Bovine Pancreas—Consuming this organ acts as a powerful digestive aid. Desiccated Pancreas is an abundant proteolytic enzyme source, facilitating protein digestion. It helps break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in meals so they can be used more efficiently with less bloating. As we age, we have reduced protein digestion and absorption, which is just one reason sarcopenia (muscle wasting) starts to speed up like a downhill runaway train. The enzymes in pancreas not only help with protein absorption, they also powerfully help stabilize rollercoaster blood sugar levels and are an excellent type 2 diabetes aid. They are also important for vibrant immune health and help with other processes in the body, like cell division, blood clotting, reducing inflammation, fighting viral infections, helping with osteoarthritis, and treating autoimmune diseases.
Desiccated pancreas also carries high concentrations of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), which helps your body synthesize cholesterol and, in turn, facilitates the creation of your mother hormone called pregnenolone that then creates your DHEA hormone, and from there, the cascade of your sex and adrenal hormones. Your thyroid hormones also benefit from pancreas ingestion because of its abundance of selenium. Pancreas supplementation and its extended list of benefits keep on growing… it can help keep your skin looking youthful, promote cellular energy, and aid DNA repair through its substantial supply of vitamin B12.
Saccharomyces Boulardii—This probiotic bears the credentials of being the most researched in the world. It is coined by many in the health industry as a super probiotic. It gets this notary from its ability to treat a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, not just the small stuff. Resistant and stubborn issues such as h. pylori infections, IBS, and IBD have been shown in research to bow to Saccharomyces boulardii. Keeping with the “resistant” theme, it is resistant in nature to being wiped out by antibiotics. This means you can supplement with it while on antibiotic treatments, and in doing so, it protects your gut against completely eradicating the good bugs in your gut.
The reason for its resistance to being wiped out by antibiotics is because this probiotic is actually a beneficial probiotic yeast. For this reason, it is a great help in preventing and healing diarrhea related to antibiotic use and other stubborn diarrheal issues.
Another reason it stands out amongst other probiotics is that it can reach areas of the GI tract that many other probiotic strains cannot. It survives the harsh conditions of digestion involving gastric acid that decimates many other probiotics. And to top it all off, it actually thrives in the human body temperature.
S. boulardii also has strong defensive mechanisms against harmful hosts. It is anti-microbial and inhibits the growth of destructive bacteria. It also has anti-toxin effects and wages war against pathogenic toxins from setting up home in your gut. One of the bad guys it goes after is parasites. It is known as an anti-parasitic and kills them off like a bad a#s assassin. Another thing it goes after is the overgrowth of Candida albicans (we’ve already discussed that we need some of this in the body to help detox heavy metals, but too much and health deteriorates quickly). S. boulardii helps with excessive candida in two ways. It is known as a biofilm disruptor. Biofilm is where large populations of “bad guy” gut bugs, like overgrown candida, hang out. Not only does S. boulardii break down biofilm defenses, but it also produces caprylic acid, which is an antifungal substance effective against Candida yeasts.
S. boulardii doesn’t just give a bit of a helping hand to the immune system; it literally super-charges it. It releases SigA (secretory IgA) in the gut, which is an immunoglobulin essential to your gut’s first line of defense. Other immune cells, like T cells, lymphocytes, monocytes, and granulocytes, are all activated by S. boulardii. Hopefully, it’s becoming more and more clear that you can’t separate immune function and the gut. One cannot thrive without the other.
Regenerative Organic Turkey Tail Mushroom Mycelium—This is our chosen fungus for the gut. It is the most studied fungus on the planet. It holds wide acclaim for its unique ability to boost resistance against pathogens and viruses. Its impressive prebiotic nature is part of how it profoundly helps the gut garner larger amounts of healthy bacteria. It repopulates good strains of bacteria into the microbiome so our gut can pull off its tall-order responsibilities.
As a prebiotic, Turkey Tail contains unique polysaccharopeptides PSP and PSK, which create the best environment for nurturing probiotics. A 2013 study published in ResearchGate, entitled “Plant Foods for Human Nutrition,” verified this by showing the ability of Turkey Tail extract to modify the gut bacteria composition in a positive way. Supplementation showed increased healthy strains and reduced harmful bacteria. These PSP and PSK prebiotics found in Turkey Tail trigger immune-supportive effects when ingested and come in contact with immune cells in the digestive tract.
Turkey Tail’s anti-inflammatory effect helps lower gut inflammation and results in overall smoother digestion.
Grass-Fed Bovine Colostrum—Colostrum is known by many in the nutrition world as liquid gold. It is like a key in the ignition of our gut. It turns on good gut function, which turns on good immune function. It contains hundreds of biologically active compounds, immune and growth factors, enzymes, antibodies, strengthening peptides, amino acids, trace minerals, immunoglobulins, antioxidants, and other vital nutrients. All these elements are necessary for a thriving gut and its domino effect on the body. One protein in particular that colostrum teems with is lactoferrin. This protein has bacteria and virus-killing traits and helps to fight infections and bacteria. It profoundly helps with pain and stiffness by lowering IL-6.
More than 5,000 published studies to date document the benefits of colostrum and its ability to optimize health at all stages and ages of life. One of these, published in Sage Journals in 2007, showed bovine colostrum to be three times more effective than the flu vaccine at preventing the flu! Another study published in Nutrients in 2021 showed bovine colostrum as a favorable solution for SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) through its ability to fortify the gut wall so that bacteria stay where they should be and don’t slip through the large intestine into the small intestine. Many studies (we won’t list them all) have shown that colostrum consumption may enhance memory, attention, and overall cognitive performance. This is due to its ability to support neuronal communication and neurotransmitter balance.
Colostrum holds prebiotic and probiotic benefits and is a powerhouse of robust good bacteria. It can help with constipation and bloating through its ability to improve leaky gut. As with many healthy gut supplements, as your gut first receives all these new probiotics and prebiotics from colostrum and from the other ingredients in our Bio-Organ Therapies, you may experience more bloating and flatulence. That should lessen with time. Don’t let it throw you off. Once you become more regular and your gut diversity increases, bloating should become less of a problem. Colostrum is plumped full of antibodies that nurture the immune system. It is anti-many bad things… anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory, for starters, and for those reasons, it is also an effective digestive aid. It not only helps constipation but is an overall regulator, so it is a diarrhea aid as well.
The sports and fitness arena has begun experimenting with colostrum, which has promising results for athletic performance. Growth factors in colostrum, along with peptides like IGF-1, have been shown to increase lean muscle mass and charge the metabolism to burn fuel better. Third-party clinical research on a leading colostrum brand showed that 60% of people in the study documented a reduction in waist circumference without other lifestyle changes. Another clinical trial, published in Nutrition in 2001, showed improved body composition and exercise performance after supplementing with bovine colostrum. We chose grass-fed bovine colostrum because of its potent performance as a “gut master,” but we were more than just a little bit excited to share all its many other talents with you.
Humic Soil Extract—This substance is from deep within the Earth and is basically decomposed plant and animal matter dating back eons. When you ingest humate, you are partaking of a piece of ancient history. You are ingesting a dark, rich, intensely nutritious substance vastly richer in minerals and enzymes than our modern, topsoil-depleted world offers. It contains 70-plus trace minerals, a startling array of phytonutrients, vitamins, amino acids, electrolytes, fatty acids, silica, and potent particles of plant DNA that do your body good.
Aside from being a historic nurturer, humate is another supplement that profoundly affects your gut microbiome. Its most considerable acclaim is its ability to reduce inflammation in the gut lining and decrease GI symptoms like gas and bloating. It is also famous for helping clear up leaky areas in the gut. Colostrum and humate together are a powerhouse team in the leaky gut area. Always remember that when you are mending a leaky gut, you are helping to prevent and fight SIBO.
Like other ingredients in our Bio-Organ Gut Health Therapy, it contains prebiotics and probiotics. By now, you know that means it also robustly increases the amount and diversity of good bugs in your gut. You could think of humate as their favorite food. Humate also helps your body absorb more nutrients from your food by activating enzymes. Overall, it allows your gut to function at its best, which means a stronger immune system, mental fortitude, and physical health.
Bacillus Subtilis—This soil-based probiotic helps your body to produce over 12 natural antibiotics to keep your gut free of harmful bacteria. Most of us modern folk aren’t exposed enough to soil in our daily lives. One of the best things about soil-based probiotics is that they colonize in the large intestine and don’t grow in the small intestine. Some 2020 research published in Gastroenterology Research and Practice found that Bacillus subtilis could alter gut microbiota and decontaminate SIBO.
B. Subtilis helps reduce IBS symptoms as well as other gastrointestinal issues. In laboratory experiments published in the Canadian Journal of Microbiology in 2000 and also in Beneficial Microbes in 2012, B. subtilis increased Bifidobacteria, decreased some harmful Clostridium groups, and enhanced the growth of L. reuteri and L. acidophilus. L. reuteri is one of the top fat-loss gut bugs (if not the very top one), so we definitely want more of it! The sad reality is that most modern Westerners do not have any of these fat-burning bacteria left in their gut. In fact, 96% of us have lost all of it. It is easily wiped out with just one course of antibiotics, so regaining it should be on our to-do list, and it is possible with B. subtilis.
B. subtilis is a no-brainer for your gut. It balances your microbiota, causing the beneficial kind to flourish and reducing the not-so-friendly kind. It is also a strong opponent against infections like C. Difficile and H. Pylori. It helps with general tummy pain and constipation, helps treat and prevent acid reflux symptoms, reduces inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, and, over time, helps with the not-so-socially acceptable three… gas, bloating, and belching. (Note the “over time” words, as any time you add in a good bug to your digestive system, there can be heightened gas and bloating at first.) Overall, digestion improves with B. subtilis, and even health-crippling issues like leaky gut syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can significantly improve over time and even retain remission. Research published in 2010 in Beneficial Microbes showed positive results for ulcerative colitis. Reduced bloody stools were seen, and there was even complete remission without relapse in some study participants.
One of the main reasons B. subtilis is so effective is that it can survive the harsh environment of digestion. It passes through the digestive tract unharmed. Unlike many other probiotic bacteria, it needs no refrigeration and is completely shelf-stable. Animal research published in 2020 in Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins showed that B. subtilis is an anti-infective and, to some extent, could replace antibiotics and improve innate immunity. It enhanced disease resistance in broiler chickens.
Another study (human this time) showed a reduced incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, nausea, bloating, vomiting, and abdominal pain (published in JMM Case Reports in September 2014). This super bacteria soldiers on in the body, improving many more things like dental health and even liver function.
A study published in Marie Lefevre et al. in Immun Ageing in 2015 showed that it can reduce the number of sick days people experience in the winter. Another study published in Beneficial Microbes in 2020 showed that supplementation promotes lower lipid levels and improves cardiovascular health. An interesting study cited in Biol Pharm Bull in 2018 showed it can even help with neck and shoulder stiffness. That’s good news for women in late perimenopause or menopause itself, who are often afflicted with frozen shoulder issues.
Digestive Enzymes—The remaining ingredients in our Bio Organ Gut Health Therapy are all digestive enzymes. Supplemental digestive enzymes help digestive complaints by aiding in the breakdown of macronutrients such as carbs, fats, and proteins. The better your food is broken down, the more nutrients you will absorb, and the less you will feel bloating and GI pain from your meals. General aging, as well as conditions such as type 2 diabetes or even severe insulin resistance, can lead your body to make insufficient amounts of these enzymes. In turn, this causes gastrointestinal complaints. Leaky gut can also cause enzyme insufficiency. Enzyme therapy is a crucial part of leaky gut healing. If gas, heartburn, indigestion, constipation, or even diarrhea are a part of your life, then digestive enzymes can be an important part of your intestinal healing.
Mary Johnson –
I’ve been taking this for a month now. I can’t say enough good things about it! Without getting too personal, I will just say that I’ve had issues with digestion since I was in my early 20s. I’m 60 now. I’ve never been regular. Ever. This product has changed everything and I am so grateful!! I’ve recently (this past week) started on the Bio Organ multi. I will post on it after I’ve been on it long enough to tell a difference.
