Let’s take an in-depth look at how each ingredient helps:
GRASS-FED LIVER – When compared to grass-fed steak, liver provides an impressive 5,000 times more vitamin A per serving and 16 times more vitamin D. It also provides four times the iron in a highly absorbable form, and it beautifully increases hemoglobin levels in the blood if they are lagging. If you are low in energy or have any form of anemia… mild or severe, it would be wise to make grass-fed liver your first go-to. Supplemental iron pales in comparison to liver’s positives in your body. But you don’t just have to lack iron to benefit from liver. It continues to beat grass-fed steak with five times the vitamin B12 and double the selenium! Selenium is vital to your thyroid and adrenal health.
Putting the grass-fed steak comparison aside, if you rival liver against any other edible food source on the planet, you’ll see liver as the winner by far every time. Liver is rich in chromium, which, among other benefits, helps stabilize blood sugar levels and can help reduce cravings for sugary foods. Many people take chromium supplements, but they are not nearly as bioavailable as liver supplements and are hit or miss in effectiveness. Taking liver is by far the wiser approach! Liver is also the highest food source of the right kind of folate your body needs. It serves as a perfect methylation source for those with MTHFR gene issues or those who are aging. Methylation dwindles for those with or without MTHFR genetic SNP’s as we all get older. Liver helps reduce high, harmful homocysteine levels not only because it is the highest folate food source on Earth but also because of its super high B12.
Let’s revisit liver’s abundant source of vitamin B12. We need to address just how significant and powerful this benefit is. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin that we cannot synthesize within our body, and we must have it to survive. Our bodies rely on it for hundreds of processes, which are imperative for proper hormone production and balance. An example of this is a vitamin B12 deficiency, which is a known cause of ovulation changes, leading to defective implantation and, ultimately, infertility. Any woman desiring pregnancy would be wise to consider supplementing with grass-fed, desiccated liver.
The robust amounts of vitamin A mentioned in grass-fed liver are also crucial for our hormonal health during premenopause and perimenopause. Vitamin A plays an imperative role in healthy thyroid function and, in a domino effect, healthy sex hormone production. Thyroid and sex hormone production are intertwined. Vitamin A, found in plants, can be a helpful antioxidant but cannot be relied upon for sex hormone synthesis or a happy thyroid. Animal forms are the only way to get the job done. The conversion of carotene (plant vitamin A form) to usable vitamin A, which is necessary for hormone production, has been a failed endeavor. In fact, synthesized vitamin A can be harmful to humans. The kind found in the animal kingdom is just the opposite… it is incredibly helpful. The retinol form of this vitamin is sourced only from animal foods and is crucial for producing hormones that keep us young. These are not just our sex hormones, but they also include pregnenolone and DHEA… our anti-stress hormones. Without adequate quantities of animal-sourced vitamin A (that liver readily provides), we cannot produce these needful hormones… even when we’re in our prime. When not in our prime? Things get even more challenging.
It’s not just hormones that grass-fed liver benefits. Let’s talk bone health. Bovine liver is also an excellent source of vitamin K2, which helps with calcium balance and is an essential nutrient for keeping our bones strong and healthy. Directing calcium into the bones and out of the arterial walls helps prevent the thickening of the arteries and reduces the risks of heart attacks. Getting it into the bones where it is needed supports bone metabolism and prevents fractures and other complications of osteoporosis. The scary truth is that the average Western diet provides zero vitamin K2. (We still supplement with isolated D3 and K2 daily, but we also love getting it naturally from liver as our foundation).
Liver also benefits the skin. Its vitamin A protects our skin from oxidative stress and UV rays. It helps fight acne and also plays a part in preventing and lessening wrinkles. While on the subject of liver supplementation and skin health, the copper and glycine it provides abundantly reduce wrinkles by contributing to the maintenance of collagen under the skin.
Liver is a smart choice for yet another reason… perimenopause and menopause, when brain fog sets in. It richly supplies choline, a well-documented nutrient associated with brain health. Deficiencies in choline are associated with the most common forms of neurodegenerative disease. There are ads on TV and the internet for all manner of expensive forms of brain supplements, from jellyfish to other fan-dangled supplements… but simple, plain, pure liver is one of the best things you can take to support your brain. If you cannot optimize your hormones, the next best thing will be liver. However, the two together are a powerhouse. Used in many chemical reactions of the body and brain, choline undergirds the nervous system and supports the development of normal (without depression) brain functioning. It’s not just choline, though… liver provides your brain with the big three required to function at its best… copper, iron, and selenium.
Need help with your vision? Liver to the rescue again. The kind of vitamin A provided in liver nourishes the cornea, retina, and eye tissue, as well as aiding better night vision. The rich supply of zinc in liver also helps support the protein structure of the eye and maintains the health of the retina and cell membranes. The ample zinc and vitamin A amounts work together for healthy eyes. Zinc allows vitamin A to travel from the liver to the retina and produces melanin, protecting the eyes from UV light.
Feel like you need a detox? Grass-fed liver supplementation should top your list. Liver provides the trace mineral molybdenum in high amounts. This acts as a coenzyme supporting the conversion of sulfites to sulfates and supports the metabolism and detoxification of medications and alcohol. (P – if you are a wine enjoyer like I am… liver and kidney organs are your best friends.) The vitamin A in liver also helps keep detoxification pathways open, as does the vitamin B12, which aids in the synthesis of certain enzymes involved in detoxing the body. Other powerful compounds in grass-fed beef liver, such as glutathione, also support your own liver’s detoxification process.
(Note – If you are postmenopause, cannot optimize your sex hormones, and decide to use liver, keep an eye on your hemoglobin levels to make sure they don’t get above range. You may need to take lower amounts than the full dose listed in the directions. Estrogen helps detox iron that gets too high. If you can optimize your hormones, there will be less need for any worry about using full doses of liver.)
ORGANIC CORDYCEPS MILITARIS MUSHROOM – In the wild, this mushroom is found at high elevations in Tibet and the mountainous regions of China. Known as Himalayan Gold, it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and carries the highest price tag of all medicinal mushrooms. Its impressive health benefits have resulted in price tags regularly seen around $20,000 per kilogram! Obviously, neither you nor we can afford that. Neither can the supplement industry harvest enough for commercial mass use (it’s hard to grow that many caterpillars). So, as you can imagine, the Cordyceps used in most supplements today is not the Cordyceps sinensis grown on parasites!
Cordyceps militaris, the kind we have sourced for our Bio-Organ Therapy, has its own phenomenal health benefits. In fact, it contains 90 times more of the health-supporting phytonutrient cordycepin than the sinensis kind, according to a 2008 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. But buyer beware – not all Cordyceps militaris sold in the supplement industry are sourced from the real mushroom (organ) extract. What is often in a supplement bottle labeled “cordyceps” is myceliated grain that is rather high in starch and low in medicinal benefits. Cordyceps militaris needs to have a beta-glucan content greater than 25% for optimal health-boosting power because beta-glucans are where this power is housed. Some Cordyceps sold are only 1-3% beta-glucans.
Cordyceps militaris has a myriad of health benefits, from keeping blood sugar levels in check, enhancing immune strength, supporting respiratory health, lowering LDL cholesterol, and providing overall heart protection. But there are a few specific areas where it shines even brighter. These areas are the ones that made us incredibly excited to pair it with liver and get it in our bodies! Its number one health benefit is its energy-boosting abilities, followed closely by greater exercise stamina, cognitive support, longevity support, and then… drum roll… libido! Mushrooms are constantly seeking to reproduce so that sexual energy is passed along to us, more so with Cordyceps than other types of mushrooms… more about that soon.
As far as energy goes, Cordyceps militaris has demonstrated through multiple studies an ability to improve oxygen uptake and the body’s supply of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate). ATP is a molecule known as “the energy currency of life.” It is our primary source of cellular energy, and this is especially true during exercise. Cordyceps militaris does not produce a forced caffeinated type of energy. The energy it affords is known as “anti-fatigue” rather than a feeling of a short burst of gusto. This mushroom is actually an adaptogen that has the ability to energize while promoting homeostasis and a sense of calm within the body at the same time. The phytonutrient cordycepin in Cordyceps can reduce our body’s stress response and is also neuroprotective.
Cordyceps is a potent antioxidant and promotes longevity by protecting cells from free radicals and the aging inflammatory havoc they ravage upon the body. When we talk about longevity… we must talk libido. Libido is a driving force of life. When it tanks, this indicates the body is no longer in a thriving condition. Medicinal mushrooms, on the whole, are libido-boosting, but Cordyceps are the fungi with the most power to raise this “life force.” It is an effective aphrodisiac in that it helps to balance hormones in menstruating women (it has been shown to increase both progesterone and estrogen), and it raises testosterone and DHT production in men in the form of testicular expression. It also enhances genital blood flow by improving vasodilation properties in the body. Reishi and Cordyceps both do this thanks to their substance, adenosine, but Cordyceps has the upper hand and has of late been coined Himalayan Viagra. A meta-analysis of studies on Cordyceps and its effect on sexual dysfunction published in 2016 in Pharmacognosy Reviews noted that Cordyceps supplementation increased the total sperm number, the percentage of motile sperm cells, and serum testosterone in men. It also presented research to support that it enhances libido and sexual performance in both animal studies and in male and female humans. One study mentioned in this research paper found that Cordyceps supplementation led to a dramatic 86% enhancement in female libido. Of course… Cordyceps is still just a supportive sexual tool here. Nothing can compare to optimized hormones through BHRT, but other tools can contribute.
